A liquid phospholipid formulation of a Curcumin extract with high concentration of phosphatidylcholine (PHOSAL® Curcumin) improves the transport of Curcuminoids across Caco-2 intestinal epithelial cells

The use of curcumin as dietary supplement to ameliorate inflammation, arthritis, stomach, skin, liver, and gallbladder problems, is hampered by the lack of oral absorption. In this study, an in vitro digestion method and Caco-2 cell-lines were used to assess the influence of the solubilisation of curcuminoids in a liquid formulation comprising a high content of phosphatidylcholine on the transport of the curcuminoids across a Caco-2 cell monolayer, compared to powdered curcuminoids.

Dietary and lifestyle predictors of folate insufficiency in non-supplemented German women

Low folate status is a risk factor for birth defects. We studied concentrations of red blood cell (RBC)- and serum folate in 198 German women in relation to information on dietary folate intake, demographic and lifestyle factors.

Effects of an Oil-Free Hydroethanolic Pumpkin Seed Extract on Symptom Frequency and Severity in Men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: A Pilot Study in Humans

Majority of men are affected by symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) from a certain age. Botanical extracts are frequently used in the early management of the symptoms. In a single-arm, mono-center pilot study, the effects of a proprietary oil-free hydroethanolic pumpkin seed extract on the symptoms of BPH were investigated.

Bioavailability Study of Maqui Berry Extract in Healthy Subjects

Several health promoting effects have been reported for maqui berry, rich in anthocyanins. Direct effects of anthocyanins as well as bioactive metabolites might be involved. Within the study, bioavailability of a proprietary standardized maqui berry extract Delphinol® was investigated based on two selected anthocyanins (delphinidin-3-O-glucoside (DS) + cyanidin-3-O-sambubioside (CS)) and two breakdown products (protocatechuic acid (PCA) + gallic acid (GA)) after a single-dose supplementation in humans.

Effects of Yeast (1,3)-(1,6)-Beta-Glucan on Severity of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Study in Healthy Subjects

Each year, adults suffer about two to four upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), mostly in winter. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of brewers' yeast (1,3)-(1,6)-beta-glucan on incidence and severity of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs).

Blood glucose response after oral intake of lactulose in healthy volunteers: A randomized, controlled, cross-over study

Lactulose can be used as a functional food ingredient. During manufacturing as liquid or crystalline formulation, impurities with different sugars occur. Lactulose may also be consumed by people with impaired glucose tolerance, including diabetics. For these consumers, it is of interest whether the described carbohydrate impurities may increase blood glucose levels after ingestion. This study was performed to investigate possible changes of blood glucose levels after oral intake of 10 g and 20 g of liquid and crystalline lactulose in healthy subjects. The small amounts of carbohydrate impurities did not influence blood glucose levels, indicating potential applicability to people with impaired glucose tolerance.

Absorption of Hydroxytyrosol from Different Sources and its Impact on Lipid Status in Human Subjects

There is growing interest in the health effects of dietary polyphenols on cardiovascular risk factors. In this context, the effect of hydroxytyrosol on lipid status was investigated in healthy subjects. Hydroxytyrosol, a polyphenol especially known from olive oil, is available on the market from different sources. Absorption from those sources is prerequisite for its effects.

Hormonal Contraceptive Use Is Associated With Higher Total but Unaltered Free 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Serum Concentrations

Intake of hormonal contraceptives (HC) is associated with higher total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations, but the effect of HC on free 25(OH)D is unclear. We investigated whether free 25(OH)D concentrations differ according to use of HC.

Protection against Tetanus and Diphtheria in Europe: The impact of age, gender and country of origin based on data from the MARK-AGE Study

Due to the successful implementation of vaccination strategies early-life morbidity and mortality due to infectious disease has been reduced dramatically. Vaccines against tetanus and diphtheria are among the most frequently used vaccines worldwide, but various studies in different European countries have shown that protection against tetanus and particularly against diphtheria is unsatisfactory in adults and older persons. In this study we analyzed tetanus- and diphtheria-specific antibody concentrations in 2100 adults of different age from 6 selected European countries (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland) in order to investigate differences in the level of protection against tetanus and diphtheria across Europe.

Zinc-Induced Metallothionein in Centenarian Offspring From a Large European Population: The MARK-AGE Project

Metallothionein (MT) family are cysteine-rich proteins that regulate zinc (Zn) homeostasis and protect against oxidative damage. Studies in transgenic mice have shown that MT favorably influence longevity, although their role in human aging is not completely understood. Within the European multicenter study MARK-AGE, we analyzed MT induction after Zn treatment in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and its relation with redox biomarkers in 2,936 age-stratified subjects (35-75 years) including the general population (RASIG), centenarian offspring (GO), and their spouses (SGO).
