Conventional and functional food, food supplements, supplemental balanced diets, probiotics, feed
Conventional and functional foods and food supplements support the nutrition of healthy persons without replacing it. The most important rule in this context is: food must be safe (Article 14 of Regulation (EC) No 178/2002; Article 17 of Regulation (EC) No 178/2002).
Food supplements do not need an explicit registration but must be notified to the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL). The Food Supplements Ordinance (NemV) also contains special guidelines on composition and labelling.
Supplemented balanced diets are dietary foods such as tube feeding or specific supplementary feeds taken by (often chronically) ill patients under medical supervision. There is also an obligation to notify (according to § 4a para. 1 DiätV) the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL). Further official regulations ensure the compatibility.
Overall, authorities and industry make very complex demands on these products. In terms of test possibilities, methodology and general scientific approaches, examination of human food is largely transferable to feed.
